Postpartum and Post-abortion Care

The Community Focused Approach for Post-Pregnancy Family (postpartum and post-abortion care) Services (PoPCare)

The Community Focused Approach for Post-Pregnancy Family (postpartum and post-abortion care) Services (PoPCare) is a four-year project funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and implemented by Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) in partnership with the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI) and Tulane University.

The PoPCare project uses community focused approach to increase access to and uptake of post pregnancy modern contraception, which is expected to reduce unintended pregnancies and, unsafe abortions. The project is being implemented in selected LGAs of three states in Nigeria: Nasarawa (Lafia, Nasarawa and Nasarawa Eggon), Lagos (Amuwo Odofin, Ibeju Lekki, Ikorodu and Lagos Mainland), and Rivers (Akuku Toru, Asari Toru, Degema and Ogo Bolo).

The project approach focuses on enabling access to family planning (FP) information and services among women who deliver outside of the health facilities and also provide comprehensive post-abortion care (PAC) following spontaneous or induced abortions.

The main target groups are young first-time parents (YFTP), especially the mothers who are aged 15-24 years among whom there is a high unmet need for FP, and post-pregnant mothers aged 15-49 years. First-time mother(s) is defined as adolescents and young women between the ages of 15 and 24 years, who are pregnant or have one/two children.

Community mobilization approach that is used to generate demand for FP and PPFP on the PoPCare project are door to door mobilization and compound meetings. During these activities, the social mobilization team, which is made up of the community volunteers, consultants and the LGA officials work within the communities to share about the benefit of family planning and also dispel myths/misconceptions which stops the target audience from accessing family planning services.
