My Powerful H.A.N.D.S Campaign

The Federal Government in collaboration with United Nations in Nigeria and funding from the European Union (EU) is implementing an integrated and innovative national SBC campaign tagged – the POWERFUL H.A.N.D.S – which will stimulate collective actions to prevent further spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria. The campaign is being implemented through the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI), an indigenous SBC organization with technical support from UNICEF.
Powerful H.A.N.D.S Campaign

Working closely with stakeholders at national and state level, CCSI facilitated the review and finalization of the overarching campaign brand, campaign materials and approaches for schools and community interventions etc. Some of the stakeholders from the Joint United Nations Agencies include UNICEF, UNFPA, UNWOMEN, UNAIDS and WHO. Others are: The Federal and State Ministries of Health, Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) Health and Human Services secretariat, Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Nigeria Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) focal persons, National Orientation Agency, and Ministry of Education.

CCSI will be supporting the COVID-19 response through mass media and targeted community/ school engagement activities in collaboration with RCCE pillars in two hot spot LGAs, in six states and the FCT. The goal of the campaign is to “Increase the number of Nigerians who believe in and practice COVID-19 preventive behaviours”. This campaign has been tagged the POWERFUL H.A.N.D.S campaign;  communicating the main message that “THE POWER TO STOP COVID-19 IS IN OUR H.A.N.D.S”. This four-month campaign is geared at increasing the number of Nigerians who believe in and practise COVID-19  preventive behaviours.

The campaign will stimulate collective action to prevent further spread of virus in Nigeria. It is expected that the innovation deployed in this campaign will make it possible to establish these practices as a norm even beyond this pandemic.

The specific objective is to develop, change and sustain behaviours, including handwashing with soap, wearing a face mask, using alcohol based hand sanitizer and physical distancing, to prevent further spread of COVID-19, through enhancing risk perception and building confidence on the preventive behaviours.
