We often see SBC as a means to an end when it often is the lubricant that fast tracks change. Curate your approach through the equity lens not leaving out the dimensions of ethics and power.
In the future CCSI plans to consolidate its expertise around other SDG areas of relevance while continuing to serve as the SBC partner of choice to government partners in Nigeria at all levels. We hope to continue to build the capacity of the next generation through a blended approach to build a pool of SBC experts in the continent and continue to demonstrate the application of SBC through research.
Make no mistake, as an organization, we are not perfect. I am sure I am speaking for the core staff of about 50 and consultants of over 400 and field agents of close to 4000 when I say, we however remain steadfast and committed to our mission of inspiring change as ambassadors of social and behavioral change.
In summary, these are some of my reflections on my journey as the pioneer Executive Director of a vibrant SBC organization. They also encapsulate some of the lessons we have learnt.
- Start With A Dream- Starting an organization is a legacy that transcends the infrastructure, achievements and opportunities. It is building an empire or dynasty that lives beyond the founders and pioneers and continues to impact lives. It is doable and it only starts with a dream
- Birthing The Vision– How a vision is birthed is instrumental to the success and destination of the organization.
- Strategic Plan– Having an articulate strategic plan is not as important as having a clear vision that is shared by all.
- Expertise– The people that work in a team are the most valuable asset. Hire up. Recruit technically competent people … There is no excuse to compromise on the expertise you need to build a good name and an enduring legacy.
- Technical Skills vs Emotional Intelligence– It is good to have a qualified leader, but when your leadership is tested, I respectfully submit that your technical skills cannot help as much as your emotional intelligence
- Divergent Lens– It is true that we say, Think Big, Start Small, Act Now. With respect to entering the development market like SBC, envision your start up through a divergent lens that considers the big picture and Thinks Big, Takes Risks, and Acts without delay
- Making a Choice– Your experience on this journey might come with pain, promise, potential, and it could be described as placid, phenomenal, pleasant or priceless. Make your choice early in the journey and let your passion drive you.
- Life Long Learning– Invest in capacity building, build an organization with a learning posture, and cost-effectively build the capacity of and mentor the next generation. Commit to lifelong learning.
- Leadership & Inclusion– Agile and transformational leadership attributes are a necessity. Expand your networks to the unusual suspects, with creativity, together you will push the narrative in the right direction. Do not leave out the underserved and persons living with a disability. There is always an opportunity to add value. SBC is that rich.
- SBC AS A Catalyst-We often see SBC as a means to an end when it often is the lubricant that fast tracks change. Curate your approach through the equity lens not leaving out the dimensions of ethics and power.
- Resilience– Be resilient. Do not be held back by the obstacles you can see, see them as a ladder that requires proactive steps so you can accumulate the needed stamina to address the obstacles you cannot see.
- What Is NOT Being Said– As a leader, build your skill to listen to and correctly interpret what is NOT being said.
